Standing just 5′ 6″, Hershel “Woody” Williams’ was initially turned away from military service during World War II because of his height. He never imagined that he’d eventually be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Williams, the last living Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima, spent some time speaking with representative of the Regional Education Services Agency of West Virginia. He discussed how someone initially too short to serve played a critical and heroic role in battle for the Japanese stronghold.

By discussing the tremendous impact teachers had on his life, he exemplifies how everyday folks can become heroes.
